 BASIC ADULT LITERACY:

The Literacy Council recruits volunteer tutors and trains them to teach literacy skills using the Laubach Method of Reading.  This highly successful method is designed for lay people to tutor primarily one-on-one.  The trained volunteer is matched with an adult who needs help improving his/her basic literacy skills: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and math.   For those working towards their high school certificate, pre-GED and GED tutoring is also available.

 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE:

The Council also trains volunteers to become English as a Second Language (ESL) tutors.  These tutors teach ESL to non-English speaking clients.  While attending to the student’s individual needs, the tutor focuses on the four basic ESL skills: listening and reading comprehension, speaking, and writing.
