Book Review: Molly Carr’s The Sign of Fear

The Sign of Fear is Molly Carr’s first book. A crime novel based on a fictional detective, it is published by MX Publishing and comprises 314 pages.
The story has two heroines – Mrs Watson and her assistant Emily Fanshaw. Mrs Watson is married to Dr Watson who is a friend of and assistant to Sherlock Holmes, the famous London-based detective. Sherlock Holmes, Professor James Moriarty (one of the fictional characters in the Sherlock Holmes books) and Dr Watson are also in the cast of The Sign of Fear.
In the Sign of Fear, Ms Carr takes on the Sherlock Holmes genre from a uniquely feminine standpoint. Her descriptive accounts of England during Victorian times are a delightful, and her depiction of Mrs Watson as a kind and homely woman only adds another layer to the plot.
As the leading lady, Mrs Watson does not hold back. At the beginning of the book she is the single Mary Morstan. Tired of sitting at home waiting for her husband to return from his travails with Sherlock Holmes, she decides to try her hand at sleuthing. Like all good sleuths, she needs a trusty sidekick - Emily Fanshaw – who is, for most of the book, dressed as a man – unusual to say the least in Victorian times.
Mary Watson is a smart sleuth, maybe even smarter than either Holmes or Moriary, but her partnership with Emily Fanshaw holds her back. Nonetheless, several diverse cases come her way for solving. And then Professor Moriarty comes calling –
The Sign of Fear is also available on both Amazon Kindle and iPad via iBooks.
So if you like mystery then this book is a good read especially as you look at the Botox prices and consider the treatment.
